At First Sight 1998

"Well, it's a love story, and I love the quote from Mrs. Eddy that love never loses sight of loveliness. And it's a story about perception even more than eyesight or love. How do we live? How do we understand life? Seemingly through our senses. But then when you look at a story like this, you come to discover there's more at play in our daily life than just what our senses tell us."  ~Val Kilmer

Only Love Can Bring You to Your Senses

Story New York architect Amy Benic (Mira Sorvino) takes a holiday at a beautiful resort and meets blind masseur Virgil Adamson (Val Kilmer).  Soon they  fall in love, to the dismay of Virgil's overly protective sister Jenny, (Kelly McGillis).

As Amy learns more about Virgil's lifelong blindness, she discovers it may be curable through experimental surgery. Amy convinces Virgil to undergo the operation. Virgil quickly learns vision may not quite be what he expected. At First Sight is directed by Irwin Winkler and also stars Bruce Davison and Nathan Lane.

Cast Val Kilmer, Mira Sorvino, Nathan Lane, Kelly McGillis

Our Two Cents This is a wonderful, sexy love story.  The amazing thing about this film is Kilmer's portrayal of a blind man. Obviously, I know that Kilmer is not blind but his performance is so convincing I believe I am watching a blind man in this film. Besides Kilmer's brilliant performance as a blind man, he is equally convincing when his sight is restored.  The ending is not what we expect but it ends as it should.

FYI Kilmer does a bit of singing in this film and he gets to show off his skills as a masseur.  Kilmer and McGills first shared the screen in Top Gun.
