My Edens After Burns 1987

A Real Treasure

Sandi Prusik

You may be surprised to learn that Val Kilmer writes poetry.  In fact Kilmer has written and published two poetry books, My Edens After Burns and Jack's Gandhi.

The first book, My Edens After Burns, is somewhat legendary among Kilmer fans. As the story (or legend) goes, Kilmer published the book as a Christmas gift for family and friends.

The minimum quantity Blue Feather Press in Santa Fe, New Mexico would print was 2,000 copies.  Of these, a few were given as gifts, which left Kilmer with quite a few extra copies of the book. It is said Kilmer put the remaining books into storage rather than sell them.

One summer, a few more books were sold at a bookstore, in conjunction with Kilmer’s appearance, as Hamlet in a play presented in Boulder, Colorado. The personally signed copies were available for purchase only one day.

Kilmer's fans have sought copies of My Edens After Burns for years.  Supply and demand drove the price of it beyond the reach of most fans, rarely selling for less than $500 and most often into the thousands.  Finding this book has been like a treasure hunt for Kilmer fans.  Occasionally copies do turn up on eBay or Amazon from secondary sellers.

Charity Event

In recent years, Kilmer has occasionally brought a few copies of My Edens After Burns to autograph shows, selling brand new copies to fans as a benefit to his favorite charities. If you are ever lucky enough to find a copy and are able to pay the going rate, grab it.  I guarantee if you don’t, someone else will.

Bookstore Treasure Hunt

Another copy was discovered by a European fan while visiting a used bookstore in London.  She found the book in a dusty attic, crawling on her hands and knees, searching  through the lower shelves and boxes of books.  Her diligent work paid off as she acquired a copy for less than 10 pounds.  For her, this was a very successful and joyful treasure hunt.

Fortune Hunter

I know of a person who came across a copy at the GoodwillStore in Madison, Wisconsin while looking for things she could resell.

Not knowing what it was, she bought it only because it was an autographed book.  She sold it for several thousand dollars on eBay.
