Fighting for New Mexico's Film Industry
Keeping New Mexico in the Loop
1-26-10 Once again, Val Kilmer was at the Roundhouse fighting to keep New Mexico, Film Industry Friendly. Rep Dennis Kintigh (R) Roswell, N.M. wants to get rid of tax incentives that have brought filmmakers to New Mexico pumping billions of dollars into the economy.
Kilmer sat down with KOB.TV's Stuart Dyson and explained:
"The film industry will go somewhere else to make movies, which is very, very bad for the state. It's really important to do acutally more, to be really active about the film business, to talk to the people that make movies. They're a very frank community, a very honest community, they tell you exactly what they need."
Kilmer then went on to remind viewers about something that happened in the 1970's:
"Bill Gates and Paul Allen [the founders of Microsoft] couldn't get a $15,000 loan by any bank in Albuquerque and Mr. Gates called his father and said 'We have two more banks to see' and he [Bill's father] said 'Don't worry about it come home.'"
"You know Microsoft's trademark to New Mexico, we shouldn't let that happen again." ~Val Kilmer
Editor's Note: Late Tuesday afternoon, the bill that would have halted the movie industry’s tax breaks was tabled in the house labor committee, which could mean it won't be voted on during the session.
