One Too Many 1985

"I did One Too Many, an afterschool special for TV about teenage alcoholism, and got all kinds of letters from kids, powerful stuff. It made me feel good about what I do."  ~ Val Kilmer

This movie made its' debut on ABC as an After School Special on May 1, 1985.  Copies of it must exist as it is still being shown in some driver’s education classes and in junior high and high school health classes.

Kilmer stars as Eric, a high school alcoholic.  Michelle Pfeiffer plays his girlfriend Annie. Mare Winningham is Annie’s best friend Beth and Lance Guest plays Tim, Eric’s best friend and Beth’s boyfriend.

Cast: Val Kilmer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mare Winningham and Lance Guest.

Our Two Cents: One Too Many is not your typical driver’s education movie.  It features a talented cast, before they were stars.  And the surprise ending is not the normal drunk driving story or message you would expect.

Copies of this TV special are not easy to find, in fact impossible might be a better description.  The film was never made available to the public for purchase. If you have an in with a high school health teacher or a driver’s ed teacher, they might know how to get a copy. You may run across a copy taped directly from television, these copies are usually poor quality, but do circulate occasionally among Kilmer fans.

FYI: Kilmer and Pfeiffer also starred together in the animated film, The Prince of Egypt.
